The Rainbow Spinny Dress

I've had a lot going on this week.  I can't believe I haven't posted anything in a whole week.  Bear with me.  Lots of stuffs goin on for the next month or so but I'll be around  : )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So...one day I go back to the newly opened Joann's in my area to get more of what I had gotten the week before (amazingly soft and light cotton/silk blend).  When I got in and there wasn't any, I was for once content to leave with nothing. *gasp*  However, my sweet little lady had another idea.  As usual, she comments on a fabric in each aisle:  Wow, this is beautiful - or - Look at this one mom!   But this time, she happens upon this cotton fabric with a black background and randomly shaped and colored flowers.
"Ooooooo mooooom this one is sooooooo beauuutifuuulllll!"  Well, it's alright,  I think to myself.  I convince her to walk with me and she just stops and says,
"But mom, we didn't pick up that beautiful fabric!  It's just sitting there and someone else might pick it up and then it will be gone and there wouldn't be any more and it was sooo beauuutifulll."
She's really starting to get upset.  She's never been so attached to a piece of fabric before - so we go to look at it and she tells me what a nice spinny dress it would make and of course we end up going to get a yard and a half cut.  It ended up being $6 something for all of it instead of $15 so I can't really complain.  I know how it is to be hopelessly enamored with a piece of fabric, and who am I to deny the beginning of my sweet girl's love of fabricy things.
I sat down with a ridiculously small amount of minutes left in the day and an idea, and somehow I managed to make it work in a few hours, with no pattern or little person to try it on (did I mention I should have been sleeping?) but I ended up with something that was really pretty great.
After ranting about it to anyone who would listen for a week or so she finally had her magical spinny rainbow dress and loves it.
Don't let the angelic sleeping girl picture fool you, it's all a big scam.  Seconds later......
I took a picture of her more recently in it but I can't find it right now.  Maybe (or not) I will get it updated later.  It would be helpful to see what she actually looks like standing up in it...
Because I didn't get to it earlier this week, and because it made me laugh, here it is for this week
Am I willing to put up with more crap.  That is the ultimate question isn't it.  Don't see how I really have a choice.  Bring it on.
Funny pin this week
Totally would do this.  Which would probably be followed up with a somewhat heated discussion about why it couldn't possibly be incorrect as it very literally followed the directions.  Which I would win whether it got a passing grade or not. Because it's awesome.
light spotty dress for my girl
This was kind of a spontaneous endeavor that kind of worked out I guess.  I don't love love the dress but kiddo does so I guess that's all that counts.
So, I got this dress at the bins,
and then I came home and put it on this zombie.  (but it's okay mom, zombies don't exist in this world)
A slightly better view of the thing ~
It looked pretty straight forward so I just got started.  Seriously, I just laid out some fabric and cut it a bit.  Nothing particularly creative but really it is an easy dress to make.  Lots of gathering but easy.  I added an extra line of....gather???...because I thought it would look better and it does.  Other than that, here's a dress.
A two hand heart rating is not too shabby.
That's about it.  I think my zombie girl has recovered.
myfm ~ Pokey Lafarge again.  And again...good lord that man knows how to play a harmonica.  And again - I mean come on - he breaks out a kazoo in a good way...yes, apparently it's possible.   I got to see their s.p.e.c.t.a.c.u.l.a.r. show last night at the Grey Eagle and it was amazing.  And now it's got my girl dancing around the room.  Good times.
and now for something completely different.......mid week randomness
On the way to work …
sweet girl of mine - Mom, why don’t you like zombies?
me - …..Because…they’re…dangerous?
kiddo - Why are they dangerous?
me - All they do is try to eat people love.  But it’s okay because they’re just pretend.
kiddo - They’re pretend!?
me - …….yes?
kiddo - You mean…they’re not really in this world?
me -  no baby.  They’re really not in this world.  Just pretend.
kiddo - oh……………..really??........So they just pretend eat your brains??
            …I’m going to go home and look them up on the computer.
She doesn't really believe in santa but I've just shattered her world with the knowledge that zombies are in fact make believe.  May she never ask me about unicorns.
Pinterest again - because they keep asking
Reason 42 I love this place.  Random Ladybug landing while I'm chillin on one badass porch with amazing music from some lovely string playing ladies next door.
And because I didn't grab a paper yet here it is straight from the site~
I expect you will be called on to move fluidly between opposing camps or competing interests or different realities. Maybe you'll volunteer to serve as an arbiter between the crabby good guys and the righteous bad guys. Perhaps you'll try to decode one friend's quirky behavior so that another friend can understand it. You might have to interpret my horoscopes for people who think astrology is bunk. You may even have to be a mediator between your own heart and head, or explain the motivations of your past self to your future self. You can't be perfect, of course. There will be details lost in translation. But if you're as patient as a saint and as tricky as a crow, you'll succeed.
Figures.  That seems to be what I've been doing for the past week already.  *sigh
myfm~just one?  I don't think so.  I've been chilling to the Civil Wars a lot this week but while I've got this going tonight I guess it's Paramore.  Pretty much their whole album Brand New Eyes.  Thanks for getting me moving today Hayley and co.
Affirmation of my commitment to not shop for the next year...
I just made the mistake of attempting to shop at the mall before work.  Usually I walk in the door and take the first left into work and am completely oblivious of the rest of the scary establishment.   However, my kiddo needs socks.  Those I can/will not make.  At least not right now.
I'm not usually very motivated to shop anytime ever, but I went ahead and walked past the safety zone of my work into the closest department store.  Half a mile and an escalator later, I have made my way through the literal ocean of stuff to the (of course) farthest corner of the store where they hide the kids area.
Here's the thing ~  I don't understand how I can walk through fifty feet of pointless costume jewelry and another hundred of countless perfumes to get to a 3 foot section with about a dozen pairs of socks of the same size (too big even for her) and color (white).
My brain hurts.  I walked back out, sat under the closest thing to a real sky I could find and spent the half hour I had left before work lost in my latest book.  Thank goodness for Audrey Niffenegger
As for my girl, thankfully she shares my affinity for a complete absence of footwear.  That gives me a few months to work up the nerve to attempt sock shopping again......ugh.
myfm is broken or something...
So this song has been stalking me for two days now. Every. Single. Time I turn on the radio - alarm comes on - this song comes on. Turn on the radio in the car it comes on - change stations - it comes on there too.  I was in and out of my car six times today and I heard it eleven times.  Doesn't stop there though.  Internet radio, at work, at the store, in a car passing by??  Seriously?  Honestly JT, it's an incredibly lovely song that is quite moving, it really is, I just don't know why you feel the need to engrain your sweet irrelevant words into my brain today.
Growing Spinny Dress
I started this dress years ago.  Probably 2010 ish?  I made it a little big so it could grow with her and it really has.  Here she is, probably 2 years ago
I just made a few pleats in the back because it was big to start with and viola ~ it makes it an even more awesome spinny dress.
Here we are, 2013, and I have finally had to take out the pleats in the back and now it's more of a shirt and shorts than a dress and rolled up pants.  But hey, I still love it and seriously, what parent doesn't love a set of clothing that lasts more than a season (going on three now) on their growing kiddo?  Not a one that's who.
A completely unscripted dose of sweetness.
Mid spin.  Love this girl so much.
And yes the weather is amazing.  You guys are totally missing out.  The air smells like hot honeysuckle and the nights are filled with fireflies. It's divine.
